APRIL, 2013

APRIL was one of the busiest months for the BR WALLS PROJECT to date. We continued Phase II with Lamar installing vinyl artwork in Downtown then tested out a new POD container art & community center model with our friends at CPEX at Better Block BR in tandem with the painting of our first murals in Mid-City. During Semaine Française d'Arnaudville the Walls Project will begin the expansion onto a state level in partnership with NUNU Arts and Culture Collective, Les Articulteurs of Redon, France, and the French Consulate in New Orleans.

MARCH, 2013

MARCH was the launch of Phase II in partnership with Lamar in which Downtown BR received two more bursts of color to adorn the cityscape. Artists Ann Boudreau and Maggie Kleinpeter's pieces look spectacular! Additionally we collaborated with local artists & activists on the Inside/Out Project : ONE BR installation to celebrate people from all walks of life who make up the diverse community of Baton Rouge - watch the video shot by one of the participants. As an arts activist, branding specialist and a 15 year vet of the entertainment industry Phillips took to the stage to discuss creating the landscape you wish to live in. The idea worth spreading is the necessity of understanding the social landscape of your hometown in order to inact change. The indiginous locals, Boomerang seekers and problem solvers, and the highly-motivated Transplants starving for a more diverse cultural experience requires a simple message that unifys rather than divides. Utilizing the principles of Entrepreneurial Activism Philips showed how the BR Walls Project is bringing about such change in his own Hometown (r)Evolution. Watch the amazing concept video that accompanied the talk by Eso Pop (aka Bennet Rhodes).

Better Block is a demonstration tool that temporarily re-visions an area to show the potential to create a walkable, vibrant, neighborhood center. Coming to Government Street in Mid City in April, 2013, Better Block will explore possibilities for transforming the corridor into a vibrant and safe destination for pedestrians and cyclists, while maintaining quality road design that optimizes traffic flow and access to businesses. With support from the BR Walls Project, and a host of volunteer residents and businesses, the installation will include the PODS Art Community & Pop-Up business village in addition to offering residents a chance to experience new designs for the road, parking, sidewalks, landscaping, business façades, and bike lanes

In partnership with BREC, and the Downtown Development District the BR Walls Project unveiled Wall #3 at the Convention Street Park. Located in the heart of the city this park was brought to life by muralists Alex Harvie and TJ Black's creation depicting the downtown skyline and outlying neighborhoods. Special thanks to Jeff and Lynne Pisto for their generous donation towards the installation and we hope this is the first of many parks the Walls Project helps enliven. Creative Louisiana, a monthly morning meetup for creative types, held its November meetup on Friday, November 30, 2012 at the Camelot Club in Downtown Baton Rouge. The featured guest speaker was Force founder Casey Phillips explained the ideology and process behind starting the BR Walls Project. Participants were treated to a floor exercise on how to use the arts to impact change in their community through activism and creativity.

Wall #2 is now complete. Butterflies dance across the piece named 'Sacrifie' which was completed in mid-October. Thanks to muralist Joseph Konert, building owners Craig Harrington & Danny McGlynn, Architectural CoatingS, Sherwin Williams, Loupe Theory Studios, SuperIntern Mizz Molly Loubiere, and all the support from the local media and our BR Wall family. Kathryn Thorpe of the Force Agency co-organized the 1st Annual BUST fundraiser for @Woman's Hospital. "Flirty, young models sporting bejeweled, bedazzled, feathered and otherwise adorned bras took to the runway at the Manship Theatre’s Hartley-Vey Studio to BUST Breast Cancer at one of the more unique runway shows to hit the Capital City in quite a while. The 30-plus bras were transformed by area artists for the show and then auctioned off to benefit Woman’s Hospital’s mobile mammography coach and patient navigator programs." - Advocate

The owners of Circa 1857 are looking to add 30 loft apartments, retail and community arts space to the existing arts and antiques market on Government Street across from Park Boulevard. Kathy Thorpe, of the Force Agency & co-Curator of the BR Walls mural project will help guide the arts component of an expanded Circa 1857, told the board that having artists living at Circa will help it hold classes for local schoolchildren, and even eventually provide facilities, a kiln or darkroom, for example, for public use. Circa’s effort got a lift when an RDA subcommittee officially recommended the agency allocate $8.1 million in new markets tax credits to the $11.1 million project. Read more about this exciting project as the BR Walls expands its reach in the BR community.

Internationally renown French artist Saliha Staib showcases her abstract work for the first time on a big canvas – 2500 square feet to be precise. In the early stages of yet another heat-pounding southern summer, the winds of cultural change are sweeping through the streets of downtown. The piece entitled "Cinq Ombres" (translated 'Five Shadows') by Staib and Clark Derbes was completed at the end of June and is the first in a series of outdoor modern works of art funded by the citizens and business owners of Baton Rouge. Work on Wall #2 begins in early August, and as fall approaches several of the heavily anticipated artists will be creating the large-scale murals on 6-10 story buildings.

The Dialogue On Race is an award winning program that has been proven to be effective in helping people understand what needs to be done and what they can do. DOR is based on the fact that when we truly understand what racism is and how it operates through institutions in our system, we will work to have a more equitable society for all Americans. The Dialogue recognizes that racism is not an “us versus them” issue in America. Racism is an institutional construct that was built into our system and much of it exist today unintentionally an indirectly. However as long as racism exists, races of color will face limited access to the institutions that all Americans should be able to access equitably.

"Over the years I’ve been to my share of Dumpsta shows, and often took them for granted as just another NOLA side project that dependably delivered. The Mint gig brought me back into the fold with deeper appreciation for the band. High energy and high impact, drawing funk influences from the best of the Meters, James Brown, Sly Stone, Prince and countless others to shape their sound with precision and soul. Meaty stuff. Don’t miss them at Jazzfest." - photo/blog credit © 2012 Jim Brock Photography
